Listening Note
This album is intended to be experienced slowly and without interruption. Each hymn is given space to breathe, allowing familiarity to deepen rather than rush forward. Silence is part of the arrangement.
About the Album
After decades of releasing hymn-based recordings for piano and guitar, Paul Cardall presents 40 Hymns for Guitar—a project defined by restraint, intimacy, and presence.
The album features solo acoustic guitar interpretations of forty sacred hymns and melodies, including “Amazing Grace,” “It Is Well with My Soul,” “Be Thou My Vision,” “Abide with Me,” and “How Great Thou Art.” There are no vocals, no orchestration, and no modern reinterpretation. The guitar functions not as a showcase instrument, but as a human voice—warm, imperfect, and close.
Many of these hymns first appeared in Cardall’s catalog through Stone Angel Music, the independent label he founded and which released landmark devotional recordings such as 40 Hymns for Forty Days, Hymns, and Hymns, Vol. 2.
Now releasing under his new label, All Heart Publishing, 40 Hymns for Guitar continues that lineage with an even quieter approach. Rather than expanding the hymns, the arrangements step back—honoring the original melodies and allowing familiarity itself to carry meaning.
This project exists intentionally outside of trend cycles and algorithmic urgency. It is designed as an evergreen devotional record—music listeners can return to across seasons and years.
