Because of the nature of Michael’s injury, Michael was life-flighted to the main campus of University Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio where he received highly skilled medical attention.

Prior to Michaels passing, the two met in 2019 after being encouraged by John Jennings, Vice-President of Royer Labs Microphones to work together. Jennings heard Paul improvise music at a dinner party in Nashville and suggested he record an album of improvisations. Paul’s previous recordings debuted on top 11 Billboard charts with more than 3 billion lifetime streams. The idea of improvising a record was foreign to Cardall who carefully prepared compositions before entering a studio. But the chance to work with Michael was a risk the pianist was willing to take.

Bishop made arrangements with Ohio’s Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Oberlin, Ohio. They recorded for two days in the Clonick Hall premier recording studio, which educates some of today’s finest piano technicians. The studio has 3 Steinway & Sons concert grand pianos. Cardall was recognized by Steinway for his distinguished career in music and outstanding loyalty to the Steinway piano. He was included on a roster, a list of the most accomplished and discriminating artists in the world.

The resulting album, Peaceful Piano (Anthem Entertainment), featured 18 songs from the session. The album was featured in Mix Magazine and Forbes Magazine. Michael and Paul discussed recording a series of improvisational pieces inspired by Paul and his wife’s heritage. Unfortunately, it was during the Covid-19 Michael Bishop passed away. Not only was this tragic for his family, but the recording academy (GRAMMYs) who respected his work and his colleagues at Four/Five Production company. Shortly after Bishop’s passing, his colleague Thomas Moore, who assisted Bishop on Peaceful Piano also passed away.

When the pandemic came to a close, Paul reached out to Bishop’s surviving business partner and fellow GRAMMY-winning engineer Robert Friedrich. They discussed doing something like Peaceful Piano to honor Bishop and the legacy he’d left behind for his children and grandchildren. The idea tied into Paul’s desire to compose songs about the legacy of his own forefathers.

Friedrich booked time at Ohio’s Baldwin College University’s Gamble Auditorium in the Kulas Musical Arts Building. Baldwin is known as the birthplace of America’s first annual Bach competition. To capture the experimental recording session on film, Paul hired Think Media Studios to send a film crew. Music performance videos were produced and edited for Paul’s YouTube channel so fans could watch the recording as it was happening live for the album.

Sitting at a Steinway & Sons model D concert grand, surrounded by cameras, in an empty theatre with Friedrich behind the stage recording every sound in the venue, Paul began improvising. The pianist utilized his familiar left hand arpeggio style that are more commonly used on instruments which serve the role of melodic lead or ornamentation. Beethoven used arpeggios in Moonlight Sonata. Today, pop artists like The Eagles (Hotel California) and Coldplay (Clocks) incorporate this style. Paul has been using this method since his first album Sign of Affection was released on cassette in 1995. After improvising several pieces Cardall shifted towards minimalistic chords allowing the listener to be aware of gradual changes. In addition many pieces incorporated germanic and polish styles of counterpoint, harmonic, with motivic organization familiar in Bach and Chopin’s simple piano pieces. Patterns were repeated to create an atmosphere – and introspective, causing the pianist to go deep into a personal reflection of exploring lands of his heritage.

Paul’s wife Tina is a first generation Slovenian American whose parents fled communist Yugoslavia as teenagers. Paul and Tina returned to Slovenia in 2016 with his mother in law Christine to do a concert encouraging the Slovenian government to help families affected by congenital heart disease. Christine had not seen her native land in 42 years. Paul walked beside his mother in law into the village of Tisovec where she was born. These experiences inspired the songs Ljubljana – Heart of Slovenia and Castles and Cathedrals. Paul had noted that many of the castles were abandoned and in ruins. Whereas Cathedrals not only remained, but regions continued to restore them to their glory.

During several songs Friedrich and Paul noticed the chirping of birds coming from the roof of the auditorium. Remembering a romantic dinner with his wife in Paris, the couple was surrounded by birds anxious to grab crumbs underneath the dining table. Cardall told Friedrich to keep rolling. That moment led to recording An Evening in Paris with the faint sound of real birds performing outside the venue.

Paul continued playing several pieces and felt his abilities draining. Nothing beyond his heritage was pouring through. Friedrich and Cardall took a break. Paul went on a walk and called his wife Tina. When he returned to the piano, Paul thought of his grandfather, Alan W. Layton, was an artillery captain in World War II. After allies landed on the shores of Normandy, his grandfather went into France where he was wounded at the Battle of The Bulge. The Shores of Normandy became the tribute to his grandfather and all men and women who endure the tragedy of war.

The composers mind drifted to thoughts of his daughters Eden and Eliza, along with the recent passing of his father-in-law. He composed Fathers and Daughters and Eliza’s Theme. The session ended.

A month later, Friedrich mixed a rough draft of 23 pieces and delivered them to Paul to do the final mix. Though the album was intended to be a solo piano record but he felt the music needed additional cinematic depth. He hired Nashville string arrangers Josée Weigand and her husband Gideon Klein to create arrangements. They were hired previously for Cardall’s December album. The string ensemble brought more depth to his piano pieces.

The resulting album titled Return Home is an introspective album featuring 13 pieces for piano that take listeners on a cinematic journey through the lands of his ancestors. The uniqueness of this album is that Cardall entered the studio without any material. All of the songs were improvised.

See The Article
Paul Cardalltag:paulcardall.com,2005:Post/72690412023-09-05T15:07:19-05:002023-09-05T15:07:19-05:00Pianist Paul Cardall to release album honoring his heritage and passing of Grammy winning audio engineer Michael Bishop
NEWS PROVIDED BY

All Heart Publishing, LLC

September 04, 2023, 16:30 GMT

September 8, 2023, Pianist Paul Cardall will release his album Return Home honoring heritage, legacy, and what we pass down to our children.

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE, UNITED STATES, September 4, 2023/EINPresswire.com/ -- From his youth, internationally acclaimed pianist Paul Cardall has been fascinated by his European heritage and the immigration stories of his forbearers who came to the United States from a variety of nations. But he has defied the odds for many many years. At one point he received a heart transplant, and he has been very grateful for this ever since.

Paul has a tremendous gift in music. His hands and his heart and his mind seem to meld with the piano. He is also a gifted composer, and has arrangements have moved untold thousands around the world. He was generous enough to let us use one of his arrangements of Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing to be the theme music for our podcast that we have done for more than 4 1/2 years now on the Come Follow Me materials. Any of you who have listened to the podcast will recognize that music of his. I wish that you could meet Paul in person and hear him play in person. There is a spirit about him that is very palpable and powerful.

We once came in to an age care facility in the Salt Lake Valley, and the music that was playing in that place was overwhelming. It sounded like it was coming from upstairs, but we thought it was over some very fine sound system. We asked the person at the front desk and she said, “Oh, that’s Paul Cardall. He’s here today playing for our residents.” They had a beautiful grand piano and he was playing “I know that my Redeemer Lives” and it was so moving he had us in tears. This is the kind of musician that he is.

We listen to Paul all the time on our various music sources and we recommend him to everyone.
Born with only half a functioning heart, Cardall wasn’t expected to survive his first day. After decades of medical procedures and complex surgeries, countless prayers, his battle with death culminated in a beautifully orchestrated heart transplant.

As a teenager, God gave Cardall the gift of composing peaceful piano music.

Maine's Morning Sentinel

by Lucky Clark

When I got a press release about a new album being released titled “December,” I knew I wanted to feature it in the month that shares the name. Ever since I started doing this, I’ve wanted to cover seasonal albums during this special time of year, and music had such an impact on me growing up, especially Christmas music. I requested and was granted a phone interview with Dove Award winning pianist and composer Paul Cardall — who is one of the most-played artists on Pandora with 2.4 billion streams on that platform so far. When he called me from his Nashville home on Nov. 30 he was more than happy to share his thoughts in a soft-spoken voice that reflects the instrumental music he creates.

Q: The first thing that I noticed upon listening to your new album was how much it reminded me of the great pianists that called Windham Hill Records home — like Liz Story, Barbara Higbie, Philip Aaberg, and of course George Winston.
Cardall: Those were remarkable days and I was signed with Narada (Records) — Windham Hills competitor — that had Peter Buffett, Tingstad and Rumbel, and David Lanz. It’s sad that all those labels got gobbled up, but a lot of the pianists are still out and around — and George is still doing stuff, but it’s not like the old days.

Dove Award-winning artist Paul Cardall is scheduled to do a virtual tour of seven Seacrest Studios, based in various children’s hospitals all over the U.S. between November 9 and December 7. Seacrest Studios are the primary initiative of the Ryan Seacrest Foundation. In addition to his appearance, Cardall is donating a keyboard to each of the hospitals.

Cardall suffered from a congenital heart defect and in his 30s received a heart transplant. After spending years of his life in hospitals and recovering from surgeries, he understands the trauma imposed, particularly young people and their families. Cardall has made it his life’s mission to create and share piano music that is healing both physically and emotionally.

“I’m really grateful for this opportunity with the Ryan Seacrest Foundation and Seacrest Studios. I think the work they are doing and the resources they offer are so important. This gives me the opportunity to speak directly to kids and parents—and I can speak from a place of experience that hopefully they can relate to. For that reason, I’m honored to do anything in my power to support them in their work,” states Cardall.

“Following my third heart surgery, as a teenager, I listened to all kinds of music,” Cardall adds. I found it helped soothe me. Not long after this time, my best friend was killed in a car accident. It sent me fully into grief and confusion. ‘Why him?’ ‘Why not me?’ I felt drawn to the piano in our house, and within moments of touching the keys, I heard melodies. I saw the piano as a puzzle and the keys as pieces to that puzzle. It’s in that same spirit that I’m hopeful other kids in hospitals would be interested in a keyboard they can work through like a puzzle. It doesn’t even matter if they know how to play or not. The medical machinery in hospital rooms can be unnerving to both the kids and their families. But the tones of a piano will offset the tones of those machines and it can help bring down everyone’s stress levels.”

“We are incredibly grateful to Paul for both his time and the generous donation of keyboards,” said Meredith Seacrest Leach, Executive Director & COO of the Ryan Seacrest Foundation. “We have seen the impact live music and music education has on patients and know that the ability to learn and play music will be therapeutic to so many of the patients who visit Seacrest Studios.”

Then, on December 10, a solo piano version will be available in digital only format.

Both versions of the album feature 14 tracks in a minimalist classical style, and all are original compositions by Cardall, with the exception of “Hush, Little Baby.” The pianist takes listeners on a journey from the rise of a new moon in September through the New Year.

One of the biggest streaming artists of our time, Cardall is a Dove Award-winning musician, composer and producer, whose music has been streamed over 3 billion times. He has had 11 #1 Billboard albums, and is one of the highest streamed artists in the world with 30 million monthly listeners from more than 160 countries and has 2.8 million subscribed fans to his various social media platforms.

“My goal with this record was to be alone with an imperfect, upright, somewhat out of tune piano,” explains Cardall. “I normally play a Steinway, but I first saw this piano in the studio when I was recording my last album The Broken Miracle. That day I sat down to play it and it reminded me of myself—somewhat broken. I began improvising and based on my experience in that moment, the piano began producing almost perfect soothing sounds. When it came time to record this album, I returned to that piano. I lit the studio with just one light that sat atop the piano. For the next several hours I improvised and created songs from start to finish. I repeated this process the next day. Leaving the studio, I felt somewhat devastated believing that this idea might have been a failure. But my audio engineer sent me the recordings and as I was listening, I noticed something different. My minimalist classical style had emerged and the beauty of it filled my ears. What I learned through the process was that all we need is someone with vision who sees the potential in the beauty of our brokenness.”

In the two decades Cardall has been recording, his style and technique have evolved into a modern Classical style. Each composition has a concise structure, simple compositional techniques, manageable technical requirements and basic harmonies. His pieces offer thought-provoking melodies and feature simple yet powerful string accompaniments.

Cardall’s collaborators on December, the full version, includes Giles Reaves (programming), Gideon Klein (cello), and Josee Weigand (string arrangements/violin/viola).

Award-winning pianist and composer Paul Cardall releases new music today with “New Moon Rising,” the second single from his much-anticipated contemporary classical piano project December. The album will be released globally on December 3 on All Heart Publishing distributed by Symphonic.

One of the biggest streaming artists of our time, Paul is a Dove Award-winning pianist, composer and producer, whose music has been streamed over 3 billion times. He has had 11 #1 Billboard albums, and is one of the highest streamed artists in the world with 30 million monthly listeners from more than 160 countries and has 2.8 million subscribed fans to his various social media platforms.

“New Moon Rising” is an original, introspective composition. “This is a time of year when we often take stock of our lives, comparing the opposites we encounter and determining if we need a fresh start in particular area of our lives," suggests Cardall. "Composing is my form of journaling."

"The compositions on December feel very autobiographical. I went into the studio without any preconceptions, but I knew I wanted to experiment with a minimalist approach of classical piano style. It’s introspective with exquisite melodies accompanied by soothing string arrangements. The music is deeply emotional, particularly because our world is in commotion and music has the power to heal hearts. I try to utilize the space between the notes like our lungs expanding in and out, our hearts beats pointing in and out, flowing with a perfect yin yang.”

Earlier this year Cardall released a joint album/book project titled The Broken Miracle, featuring special guests including David Archuleta, Tyler Glenn (Neon Trees), Ty Herndon, Rachel Yamagata, Thompson Square, Matt Hammitt and many others. The Broken Miracle chronicles his life dealing with a congenitally defective heart, through his transplant 12 years ago. Cardall is also the host of a successful podcast, All Heart, and a YouTube series All Heart Adventures, featuring Cardall in various "bucket list" scenarios--living his life to the fullest, with gratitude and appreciation.
Paul Cardalltag:paulcardall.com,2005:Post/65985082021-04-08T16:11:55-05:002022-02-01T04:14:37-06:00We Are All Worth Rescuing: Paul Cardall & Charles Martin
JESUS CALLING (30 Million Copies Sold)

Narrator: Welcome to the Jesus Calling Podcast. Sometimes situations in life are beyond our control, and when we’re faced with impossible circumstances that begin to close in on us and maybe even threaten our very existence, we can cling to the hope that God will deliver us and heal us, just as David prayed in the book of Psalms 32:7: You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.

Pianist Paul Cardall was born with half a heart and faced years of heart surgeries before receiving a transplant that changed his life forever. Author Charles Martin was inspired by the Biblical story of the shepherd who left his ninety-nine sheep to rescue the one who had gone astray, which inspired his book, The Water Keeper.

BY KATHERINE YESKE TAYLOR

February 8, 2021

Pianist and composer Paul Cardall has been incredibly prolific, and on February 5 he added to his discography with The Broken Miracle, which he reckons is his 22nd studio release. This one is special, though, because it is “probably my most vulnerable project of my career. It’s a culmination of everything I’ve been through. This is a reflection back on my journey,” he says, calling from his Nashville home.

Cardall certainly has led an extraordinary life. “I was born with only half a heart,” he says, which meant that he was not expected to live for long. Cardall has beaten those odds—but this meant he had to endure a childhood largely spent in hospitals. As an adult, he has undergone a heart transplant. Still, despite such daunting obstacles, he has built a successful career, becoming one of the most-played artists on Pandora (with 2.4 billion streams on that platform to date).

Cardall’s story is so compelling that there is an additional aspect to this project: “[The album] accompanies the novel that’s been written about my journey. It’s a fictional story based on real people and real events in my life,” Cardall says. This book—also titled The Broken Miracle—came out on February 2. “It’s a way for my audience to experience the things I’ve been through that I’ve drawn inspiration from.” To ensure that the subject matter was handled correctly, Cardall brought in his longtime friend, bestselling author J.D. Netto.

Staff | February 5, 2021

Nashville, TN (February 3, 2021)
Christian music songwriter and producer—and former Mormon—Paul Cardall, has announced the upcoming release of his newest album, as well as a new book.

The new album, The Broken Miracle, is a memoir type album, following the story of his life and it’s based on the biographical fiction novel of the same name, which was written by J.D. Netto, the book will be released on February 2, with the album following on February 5.

Paul posted this statement on FB back in October of 2020:
“I’m usually very private about my faith because I respect each of you who come from a variety of Christian denominations, and those who are faithful in their Judaism, Hinduism, Islam, and even some of my Atheist and Agnostic friends. I respect your journey as you’ve respected mine.

As a Christian, there comes a time in our lives when we can no longer deny a spiritual transformation that occurs in our lives as we honestly, humbly, and submissively seek answers and healing from God.

Over the past decade, my life has dramatically shifted away from Mormonism towards Christ. Growing up I believed in Jesus and knew Him because I relied on Him desperately with every illness. I give God the credit for guiding my medical team on raising me from the dead, temporarily like Lazarus, and fixing me though organ donation. Jesus changed my heart literally and began changing my heart spiritually these past few years.

The law of Moses was fulfilled and yet for 45 years I’ve continued to read the law and participate in rituals with a symbolic veil over my eyes (2 Corinthians 3:15). Like Saul, I was ambitious in declaring boldly that I knew it all…but that’s a whole other conversation. Needless to say, like Saul I, too, was blind and I apologize.

I love you all so much.

If you are interested in pursuing a life filled with sincere healing—free from judgement in a world where Jesus asked the woman caught in the very act of adultery, “Where are thine accusers?” “None, Lord.” “Then neither do I condemn thee” come with me. Where Jesus waited to mentor a woman at the well He knew was living with a man who wasn’t her husband, whoever was forever changed by that one by one encounter, then come. And to many more misfits, outcasts, moths, who were rejected by the Church of His day, that He encountered and healed, come let’s follow this Jesus. He is my God and He wants to be your God. All are welcome to the table. Come with me, let’s go follow Him and encounter all those in need of healing, compassion, mercy, and love. None are rejected. Know the truth and this truth, which is Jesus, will set you Free… I testify of this—I am free.” — Paul Cardall

BY BARBARA SCHULTZ | MIX MAGAZINE JAN 2020

Ten years ago, pianist Paul Cardall was months into his stay in Primary Children’s Hospital, Salt Lake City, Utah, where he awaited a heart transplant. Born with a congenital heart defect, Cardall had been in and out of the same hospital since he was an infant.

“I lived most of my life with a half-functioning heart, and the only experts available to care for me were in a children’s hospital,” he explains. “This is because most people with my diagnosis didn’t survive. I was at the end stage, waiting for a heart because I was slipping away.”

Music was Cardall’s refuge during this difficult period. “There was a beautiful piano that Steinway had donated to the children’s hospital lobby,” he recalls. “At night when I had time to myself—even though I was hooked up to IVs and other machines—I would ask my nurse to help me take everything out to that piano.”

Night after night, Cardall extemporized in the hospital lobby, until finally a donor heart became available. Ten years later, Cardall decided to recapture the emotions that had poured out during his hospital stay on a solo piano project called Peaceful Piano.

Internationally renowned pianist, composer, producer and songwriter, Paul Cardall, is dedicating his poignant rendition of the Christmas classic, “O Holy Night,” to fellow heart disease patient Mandy Dutton this holiday season.

Sung by GRAMMY Award-winner CeCe Winans, it’s a featured track on his album Christmas, which recently earned Cardall Instrumental Album of the Year at the Gospel Music Association’s 50th Annual Dove Awards held October 15th.

Cardall shares, “’O Holy Night’s’ lyrics remind us this time of year to love one another. When we do that as the song suggests, ‘chains shall break… all oppression cease,’ which to me means alleviating the suffering of others like my friend Mandy. A wife and mother of four children, she, once like me, is in the fight for her life.” Continuing, “Who better to convince us of that message than one of the most awarded gospel singers of all time, CeCe Winans.”

Creating a GoFundMe campaign on givingtuesday, Dutton is facing exceptionally difficult times this season. The mother of four, including three adopted children has been denied by five hospitals for a life saving heart transplant. The family is in need of assistance to not only cover her medical bills, but also to move to a lower elevation, in hopes of extending her life.

As soon as Paul Cardall was born, doctors knew something was terribly wrong. He was a blue baby. Oxygenated blood wasn't pumping properly through his body.

At only 22 hours old, Cardall underwent a difficult operation to save his life. The doctors discovered what amounted to only half a functioning heart and they warned his parents it was only a temporary fix for his complex congenital heart defect. The tragic prognosis: "Don't expect your son to survive."

Yet, Cardall made it home from the hospital. Months turned into years as he went for periodic checkups, took piano lessons, earned his Eagle Scout badge and joked with friends about the noticeable scar on his chest.

Some of his earliest memories were at Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City, where the staff were like family.

At age 13, he nearly died from an infection. He had a complicated heart surgery because of it. A year later, he returned for reconstructive heart surgery.

Cardall had always been fighting for his own life. But it took the sudden death of his best friend, Dave Creer, in an auto-pedestrian accident for Cardall, then 16, to grasp the bigger picture.

"The reality of life and how fragile it is, as a teenager, really hit me," he said.

Cardall had never been keen on practicing the piano, but within a few hours he wrote "Dave's Farewell" for his friend.

Dave's parents cried when Cardall performed it for them.

Cardall is also celebrating the 10th Anniversary since receiving a new heart with his latest album Peaceful Piano, which was released August 23rd and was recently featured in Forbes, who noted he “draw(s) upon his own experiences to create soothing melodies that offer comfort.” As well they said, “His songs take the listener on an emotional journey.”

The 18-track album of piano solos features album opener “A New Beginning”, along with “Dance of The Forgotten,” a poignant song written in honor of donors who have given the gift of life with their selfless act of organ donation.

Born with congenital heart disease, Cardall went thru countless surgeries his childhood and adolescence before getting a transplant ten years ago. In and out of the hospital, he taught himself how to play piano as a teenager.

Overall, Cardall has been responsible for 11 No. 1’s with an additional 21 in the Top 10, totaling over 40 charting releases and 300 weeks on the Billboard charts in his career. His roles as an award-winning film composer, musician and producer, which have led him to collaborating with such stellar artists as Grammy award winning gospel singer CeCe Winans, Audrey Assad, Steven Sharp Nelson from The Piano Guys among others.

Currently based in Nashville, Cardall performed with Ty Herndon at this year’s LoveLoud Festival in Salt Lake City. In honor of his album Christmas, Cardall also performed at The White House for the National Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony and with Winans at the historic Ryman Auditorium for the annual Tokens show.

AMMON, Idaho (KIDK/KXPI) - Paul Cardall has recorded 11 No. 1 albums on the Billboard charts. He has had 21 albums in the Top 10. His music has amassed 2 billion streams and counting, with 25 million unique listeners. If that's not incredible enough, he taught himself to play piano as a teenager.

"Because everybody that had what I have died," said Cardall.

A rare form of congenital heart disease brought him into this world with half a heart. He was born with only two chambers. The condition led to countess medical procedures as a young boy -- too many to mention, he said. To pass the time, Cardall began taking piano lessons.

"Well, I quit after six months. I hated it," he said.

He would go on to teach himself. Things really began getting serious in his teens, both in his music world and with his health. He was staying in a hospital days at a time.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Paul Cardall’s amazing career started with three simple notes that came to mind as a 14-year-old boy, who was grieving over the tragic and sudden death of his best friend that died in a car crash.

He had no formal training on the piano, just six months of lessons when he was eight years old.

Now, after 21 top ten billboard albums and two billion streams, he’s the first Utahn to be nominated for a Dove award from the Gospel Music Association.

“I’m overwhelmed and grateful,” Cardall said. “It’s the equivalent to the Grammy’s for the Christian Community.”

Cardall said he sat down at a piano and the notes came to his mind. His friend was a piano player.

“It’s almost like a question,” Cardall said after playing those three notes. From those notes, Cardall said he started composing songs and would practice three hours a day.

However, this incredibly talented worldwide music composer isn’t about flash and flare, but inner feelings and emotion.

“I want to get out of the way and let the music do what it does for you,” he said. “I want to enrich a life rather than entertain a life. I don’t want any attention on me I want it on the music.”

SALT LAKE CITY — It’s a good time to be Paul Cardall.

The Latter-day Saint pianist, composer and producer from Utah is celebrating the 10th anniversary of his heart transplant by releasing a new album, “Peaceful Piano,” and he’s also been nominated by the Gospel Music Association for the 50th Annual Dove Awards’ Instrumental Album of the Year (for his album “Christmas”).

His last three albums have also done well on the Billboard charts.

While Cardall is grateful for the personal success, he also sees it as a sign of progress in the musical world for the vast majority of Christian musicians, he said.

“This is the first time a Latter-day Saint has been nominated by the Gospel Music Association for Album of the Year in its instrumental category,” Cardall said. “For years, Excel Entertainment has worked and worked and worked to get some of our music into the Christian mainstream. It’s happening, finally.”

The 46-year-old will find out if he wins on Oct. 15 at the Dove Awards in Nashville, Tennessee, where he currently resides. The Dove Awards promote Christian and gospel music.

CLARKSBURG — Pianist Paul Cardall delighted audience members at the Robinson Grand Performing Arts Center Saturday evening with a concert benefiting local wellness organization Healthy Harrison.

Cardall, who was born with a rare heart deformity and had to undergo a heart transplant, shared not only his music, but also his inspiring personal story of overcoming adversity.

“The purpose of my music is to help enrich people’s lives,” he said. “It’s a resource to help people access emotions that aren’t always easy to access that allow us to re-evaluate our lives, where we are and think about things that really matter. There’s a God message in it, but everyone has different beliefs.”

Cardall compared his music to Step Three of Alcoholics Anonymous, which asks drinkers to “turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understand Him.”

“You want to use music as a tool to let go, so you can let that higher power enrich you and give you whatever you’re in need of,” he said. “It’s not a New Age thing. It’s very down to earth.”

Cardall said he was excited to be in Clarksburg, and he commented on the beauty of the recently renovated Performing Arts Center.

“This is an absolutely gorgeous theater,” he said. “I think it’s really extraordinary that the people have come together to renovate this place. I’m excited to be a part of this.”

Cardall also marveled at the theater’s Steinway & Sons Model D Concert Grand Piano.

“This is one the nicest Steinways that I’ve been able to play,” he said.

John Paul Nardelli, executive director of Healthy Harrison, said Saturday’s benefit concert was a major milestone for the organization.

Audrey Assad’s ethereal vocals sonically soar over Paul Cardall’s haunting “In the Bleak Midwinter.”

The track comes from Cardall’s freshly released “Christmas,” an often moody yet elegant collection of piano- and string-laden songs.

Cardall leads with “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” and later moves through a spiritual standard, “O Come O Come Emmanuel,” that’s rich and frothy.

It’s also the perfect lead to the more plaintive “Jesus, Once of Humble Birth.”

Washington • Noted Utah pianist Paul Cardall will join 11 other performers at the unveiling Wednesday of the National Christmas Tree near the White House.

Cardall, who has just released his new album “Christmas,” will play a composition of “Silent Night” with the Army Blues, the premier jazz ensemble of the U.S. Army Band.

“It’s a great tribute to Utah,” Cardall said Tuesday as he prepared for a practice on the Ellipse just south of the White House. “We have so much talent in Utah and so many of us are able to be on a national stage, and it’s really a good representation of all the talent that exists out there.”

Cardall, whose music ranges ranges from religious to New Age to classical, will perform in front of a large audience at the event where President Donald Trump is expected to speak. A recording of the lighting ceremony will air Sunday at 8 p.m. MST on Ovation TV and the Reelz Channel.

The Utah musician will be joined by the band LOCASH, Spensha Baker, Gabby Barrett and Matthew West, among others.

This year’s ceremony is the 96th event where presidents have gathered to throw on the lights to start the Christmas season. The main tree, which is permanently planted just outside the White House gates, is surrounded by 56 other smaller trees representing the 50 states, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories.

Cardall says one the special parts of the event is that it’s sponsored by the National Park Service and is nonprofit, meaning it highlights the nation’s most idyllic vistas.

SALT LAKE CITY — Nashville was never on Paul Cardall’s radar. The classical crossover pianist, who grew up in Millcreek and stayed in Utah, thought of country and bluegrass when he thought of Nashville. It didn’t seem like the place for him.

“But if there’s one thing I’ve learned in life, it’s that it’s better to be led than to be driven to success,” Cardall said.

He and his family have lived in Nashville for two years now, after a road trip through the city prompted him and his wife to make the move. (They still keep a home in Draper.) Their experiences in Music City led to Cardall’s next big gig: performing at this year’s National Christmas Tree Lighting in Washington, D.C. on Nov. 28.

For the event, now in its 96th year, Cardall will be joined by the U.S. Army Blues, a longtime blues brass band composed of U.S. Army members. They’ll perform a special rendition of “Silent Night” that Cardall arranged specifically for the show.

“This is a German piece, a classic from Franz Gruber, but this is very American-sounding,” he said. “I wrote it specifically for the Army band, but integrate my style and my sound. So it’s going to be fun.”

The show comes on the heels of Cardall’s latest album, “Christmas,” which recently debuted on nine different Billboard charts. According to Cardall, “Christmas” was two years in the making. He enlisted Jim Daneker, a longtime composer and producer for Christian artist Michael W. Smith, to helm production duties. The result, Cardall said, is “not what I thought of two years ago. It’s so much more.”

Cardall hopes “Christmas” will break him more fully into the Nashville market. Over the years he’s developed a robust following throughout the United States and abroad, “but the southern United States has always been a challenge, to get my music into the homes of these wonderful people that live here,” he said. “For whatever reason, I haven’t been able to reach into those homes.”

Not that Nashville only cares about country music.

“There is so much energy here, and it’s not just music,” he explained. “There is a surge of people coming to this city for many reasons. But it’s different from L.A. and it’s different from New York in the sense that there’s a hospitality here. And not everybody is from here. So if you can mentor somebody, you do. And so many people have come in and out of our lives here, it’s unbelievable.”

He recently performed at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium, which has been open since 1892 and housed the Grand Ole Opry from 1943 to 1974, with lauded gospel singer CeCe Winans. Cardall remembers that road trip to Nashville, when he and his wife felt they needed to move there.

“And we weren’t exactly sure why,” he admitted.

Now, it seems, Cardall is starting to find out.

The spirit of inspiration runs stronger than usual through this year’s batch of new holiday music collections, with fresh melodies and lyrics in some of the best. Veteran country singer-songwriter Rodney Crowell, Oklahoma recent arrival JD McPherson, the long-running Nashville, Tenn.-based genre-defying band the Mavericks and Texas’ barnstorming Old 97’s each have delivered Christmas albums built around inviting new songs that make them worthy additions to the favorites you might turn to year in and year out. Albums, listed alphabetically by artist, are ranked on a scale of one star (poor) to four stars (classic). Let the roundup begin:

*** Paul Cardall, “Christmas” (Stone Angel Music). The pianist, composer and arranger has long been a force in Christian music circles, which seems an ideal launching point into this Christmas album. His approach favors power, glory and elegance in the predominantly instrumental arrangements of tunes familiar and new. Three featured vocals come from guests CeCe Winans, Patrice Tipoki and Audrey Assad.

With a roster of songwriters that includes Chris Janson, Tony Martin and Jordan Davis, the fortunes of ole Music continue to be very bright -- and now, the company finds itself expanding into some new territory. Billboard has exclusively learned that New Age musician Paul Cardall has signed an agreement that will include future recordings and publishing. In addition, ole will acquire Cardall’s prior 27 releases and several additional albums issued on his Stone Angel imprint. ole’s Gilles Godard, vp corporate affairs and business development, says he’s excited to stretch out into new waters.

“We’ve always wanted to find great writers and artists in that realm of the business, but when we started to talk with Paul and his manager Garrison Snell, we knew he was the perfect fit,” Godard tells Billboard.

The agreement comes as the musician has released his first holiday album in 13 years. Simply titled Christmas, the release hit nine different Billboard charts at the same time -- a feat that Godard stands in appreciation of. “When you look at his success across the board, he is doing some amazing work, and reaching an incredible audience,” he says.

There’s something about a great Christmas album that transcends time and becomes part of the soundtrack for holiday memories for years to come. Paul Cardall has crafted such an album with his stunning new collection Christmas, his first Christmas album in 13 years. Pre-orders begin tomorrow, October 5 on Amazon , iTunes, and PaulCardall.com, with an album release date of November 2. Fans participating in the pre-order will receive "Jesus, Once of Humble Birth" in advance.

Cardall has a massive world-wide audience and is known for his expansive musical performances that encompass multiple genres, including classical crossover, contemporary Christian and new age, Cardall has earned 4 No. 1 albums on the Billboard charts, amassed more than two billion lifetime digital streams and continually earns over 25 million streams monthly. His most recent number 1 album was last week when "Sunday" hit the top of Billboard's New Age chart.

Cardall, who generally produces his own albums, this time tapped Michael W. Smith’s longtime musical director Jim Daneker as producer for the substantial project. “This is the first time in 20 years I’ve worked with a producer,” Cardall notes. “I’ve always been a fan of Michael’s music, and the opportunity to work with Jim gave me the moment to take my music to the next level.”

"When I first took this on this project I thought it would be easy because it’s a piano record," Daneker adds. "But it’s not been easy. It’s been one of the most challenging things I’ve ever done. So much hangs on every little note, every texture, every detail. We’re focused on the centerpiece, which is Paul’s piano, but ideally we made something just blossom out of that. This is one of the best-sounding, if not THE best-sounding Christmas record I’ve ever heard." Christmas was recorded at Nashville’s historic Ocean Way Studio.
Paul Cardalltag:paulcardall.com,2005:Post/54567862018-10-05T14:38:12-05:002021-07-04T21:11:16-05:00Paul Cardall CD “Sunday” Tops The New Age Billboard Chart
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
John Miller - Executive Editor THE EXPONENT TELEGRAM | Jul 26, 2018

Wow.

We don’t know what’s more impressive: The Robinson Grand Performing Arts Center landing talk show host/comedian Jay Leno and legendary rock band Guess Who as lead performers for their grand opening or selling out that Oct. 20 concert in less than two hours.

Yes. Two hours.

Granted, the Robinson Grand has limited seating of 1,010. But that’s the perfect size venue to see comedians like Leno and Bill Engvall, of Blue Collar Comedy Tour fame, who will play the theater Nov. 17.

And the theater is perfect for hosting the Grand Performance Series, a four-concert slate that opens Sept. 30 with Maureen McGovern, a Grammy-nominated singer and Broadway performer.

It will also be a great place to listen to Paul Cardall, a gifted pianist who works across several genres, but serves to inspire not only with his music but his story of overcoming health conditions. He will play the Robinson Grand Nov. 16, fittingly as a benefit for Healthy Harrison.

Robinson Grand Performing Arts Center Executive Director Ryan Tolley and Clarksburg City Manager Martin Howe, both driving forces in the theater’s great start, should be applauded for their performance.

What has been accomplished thus far is fantastic, and the buzz around the region is that people can’t wait to see the new and improved Robinson Grand, an iconic theater that has long been a part of Clarksburg’s downtown allure.

The potential is nearly endless, from touring Broadway stage shows, to top-flight comedians and concerts from a variety of genres, including gospel, contemporary Christian, country, rock and classical.

When you team the Robinson Grand up with the Clarksburg Amphitheater, which has also enjoyed great success, Clarksburg finds itself with two top-flight entertainment venues which should be able to draw people to the area.

The hope is that the Robinson Grand Performing Arts Center will help spark further development by increasing foot traffic. And thus far, Tolley and his staff have done well in setting up an impressive lineup of events, from star-studded concerts to Sunday afternoon movies.

From its Aug. 4 “soft opening,” which is open to the public for the nominal fee of $10 and includes several performers, to May 19, 2019, the theater has already scheduled 19 events, which do not include private events.

And we’re sure that Tolley isn’t done lining up more performances as the area native appears to have a knack for this business.

Maybe its our great hope for the Robinson Grand Performing Arts Center’s success, but we truly believe the renovated theater can make a huge difference for Clarksburg — and North Central West Virginia.

That’s the overwhelming feeling that we’re sensing with the Robinson Grand. It has that something special, that certain appeal. In the entertainment world they call it that “wow factor” that guarantees success.

All we can say is wow, wow, wow.

When you listen to the musical selections on Worth of Souls, you know this is not just another contemporary Christian album. is is a selection of chosen psalms to stir your heart and encourage your soul. “ is album is a tool—a med- ication—to help people feel something hopeful,” Cardall states. And without a doubt, this project is that and so much more. World-renowned pianist, com- poser, and producer, Paul Cardall have done an exceptional job in presenting an album that will sure to prove how music can help others overcome hardships and recognize you are of substantial worth.

His roles as an award-winning lm composer, musician, and producer, have found him collab-orating with such stellar artists as CeCe Winans, Audrey Assad, The Piano Guys Ellee Duke, Kenz Hall, and more. He spans many genres including Classical Crossover, Contemporary Chris-tian, and New Age, and in doing so has garnered 3 #1 albums on the Billboard charts.

The star-studded project has already hit #6 on the Amazon charts and on iTunes has hit the Top 10 out of 150 new releases. Now with more than 2 BILLION lifetime digital streams, he cur-rently averages over 25 million streams monthly. Released on April 27 of this year and Co-pro-duced by Trevor Price which is being released on Cardall’s Stone Angel Music label, Worth of Souls, is sure to reveal to lis-teners that they have a huge value—that they have worth. Please give a heartfelt welcome to Paul Cardall.

Among Paul Cardall many ac- complishments, you are also a speaker and philanthropist. You are originally from Salt Lake City, Utah. Tell us more about who you are.

Born and raised in Salt Lake. My ancestors came from England, Denmark, and The Netherlands. My parents recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary so I’m one of the fortunate ones to have been raised in a very supportive and loving home. I have 8 siblings who are all mar-ried with children. Because I was born with a complex congenital heart defect, doctors told my parents I wouldn’t survive.

Fortunately, a surgeon opened my infant chest and corrected some of the deformed heart. I had numerous surgeries grow-ing up and was drawn to music over sports.

During college, I established a music career signing with Vir-gin Records and later going in-dependent. My congenital heart disease and my talent led me speaking by invitation to hun-dreds, if not thousands of med-ical related events as well as church testimonies.

My career was put on hold when I was listed for a heart trans-plant. I waited 385 days. During that time friends did a fundrais-er for our family and after I sur-vived, received numerous invi-tations to share my story in all kinds of venues; from Nursing medical conferences, American Heart Association conferences, to Youth conferences and much more. I observed a lot of heart patients forgo college because medical bills take the place of tuition. So, we created an en-dowment at Salt Lake Commu-nity College (SLCC) and offer full tuition waiver scholarships to students affected by congen-ital heart disease. It’s been a joy to see these students continue on with their education after the scholarship expires. We chose SLCC because it’s more afford-able than the Universities.

Please share your journey in becoming a music composer and producer?

As mentioned above, I was drawn to music from an early age. All of my paper-route mon-ey went to buying records and cassettes. I spent hours at the record store sampling. Piano music became popular in the 80s and 90s and I was drawn to the style of George Winston, Yanni, and Enya. I liked how pop and classical music were com-bined to make a catchy tune. I sat at the piano and tried mim-icking, discovering I could create my own music.

The piano was a puzzle and ev-ery day as a teenager I spent hours putting the pieces to-gether without any formal train-ing. A friend mine passed away shortly before graduation and I was led to the piano. I wrote my rst song. At that moment God put on my heart that all was well. I shared the music with my friends’ parents and their friends. It was like a calling, God leading me to create music, to help alle-viate suffering and pain. My mu-sic is a tool or a resource to help people access God’s love. Music doesn’t heal us. God heals us. I’m trying to help people get in the right frame of mind with the music so their thoughts turn to Him.

You say this album will be a “prescription for people who are struggling with depression or a feeling of being lost.” Tell us more about the purpose of Worth Of Souls? Why do you have such a deep concern for those are suffering from depression?

Depression is growing problem in our society. Suicide continues to plague us. I’ve lost a handful of friends and, ironically, the heart beating in my chest after the transplant came from a young man who signed up to be an organ donor and then took his life. Families are so deeply affected when there is sadness, grief, de-pression, and when those they love give up. Music has clinical-ly been proven to change our mood, our thoughts, and thus how we behave. Each song on Worth of Souls was handpicked because the lyrics and the music counter negative feelings and restore con dence by anchoring our hope in Jesus, for He is Wor-thy of it all, and He wants to heal us.

The project features per- formances by an array of award-winning artists such as Kenz Hall, Jordan Moyes, Ashley Hess, Ellee Duke, Charley Jenkins, Sierra Lauren, Jor- dan Moyes, Jim Daneker, Trev- or Price, Ashley Hess, Justin Williams and Emily Bea. What was it like working on this al- bum with such artists?. When choosing artists for such an incredible project what exact- ly do you look for?

This was an altruistic project. Each of these artists is unique. They are pop, country, and sing-er/songwriters. Most of them have never written Christian mu-sic although they are Christian. So, it was a beautiful challenge for some of them like Ellee Duke who was recruited to be on Amer-ican Idol and turned it down be-cause she was writing in Nash-ville and already touring with LeAnn Rimes. Her tune, “Lift Me Out” is a hit song. Wow! The lyric she gave us describes the battle we all go through... “The war in my mind that I couldn’t nd my way out of and you were stand-ing there with all of Your love.” It’s beautiful... Kenz Hall and Justin Williams were on Ameri-can Idol and did very well on the show. Charley Jenkins worked in Nashville on Music Row as a country artist and writer before leaving to carve out his niche playing rodeos, fairs, festivals, opening for everyone from Tay-lor Swift to Jason Aldean. Emily Bera, Ashley Hess, Jordan Moy-es, and Sierra Lauren are great singer/songwriters and have such a love of the Lord that it was a no-brainer to ask them to be part of the project. Not one of the artists ever questioned the pur-pose—-everyone was on board throughtheproductionprocess, excited, anxious to share God’s love through music. Trevor Price produced the project with me and performs on the album. Jim Daneker is Michael W. Smith’s musical director, who not only is producing my personal Christ-mas album for this year, but he contributed a beautiful piano piece called “The Homecoming.” Everyone was exceptional, and each had a powerful experience with God doing this project.

This album project features 13 handpicked contemporary Christian songs, to convey a heartfelt message to each listener. Among such songs are How Can It Be, Oceans, Come As You Are, and the ti- tle track, Worth Of Souls. Why did you choose these partic- ular songs? Who do you feelwould bene t the most fromhearing the message in these songs?

Half of the album are original songs. I wrote “Lay It Down” and “Worth of Souls.” Jordan Moyes wrote “O Glorious Day.” Ellee Duke wrote, “Lift Me Out.” Emily Bea wrote “Push & Pull.” We also wanted some songs that have already proven powerfully effec-tive at helping people feel God’s love. “How Can It Be,” “Come As You Are”, “Redeemed”, “Tears of The Saints”, and “Oceans” are beloved worldwide. Our version of “Oceans” feels like an original tune because it’s fully orchestrat-ed with a gentle acoustic guitar and the voice of Jordan Moyes, whose music feels and sounds like John Mayer (if Mayer sang for God). The lyrics are the main reason we chose these songs. When we listen to music, the messagesinksintooursub-con-science. Lyrics that preach and teach the word of God changes us and makes us better people.

In 1999, you founded Stone Angel Music: a label provid- ing services in artist devel- opment, merchandising, and recording. And you have nine signed artists and has re- leased over 50 instrumental and compilation albums. Now, that’s impressive. Tell us more about your record label? What do your genres include?

Stone Angel Music began in 1999 when I decided to leave Virgin Records and go indepen-dent. The problem was that there is this genre of music called “New Age” and the new agers sort of hi-jacked that genre and it became associated with their form of spirituality. I’m a Chris-tian. I love Jesus. The heart of my music and all I do is God. The artists who we would sign to the label were artists who per-formed with me on stage or I was familiar with their values. Steven Sharp Nelson, a cellist, was per-forming with me and a handful of other Christians from the Rocky Mountain region. We released a cello album, Sacred Cello, fea-turing some hymns and originals and he never thought it would sell. Not only did the album de-but on the Classical Billboard chart above Yo-Yo Ma, but Steve has gone on to create “The Pia-no Guys” who perform arenas all over the world and have music videos seen by hundreds of mil-lions. Overall, our goal at Stone Angel Music is to create albums, which are resources for people to use to create an atmosphere where the fruits of the spirit are felt.

If there is one takeaway from this album what do you hope it would be? Can you share a testimonial of how listeners have been impacted by it?

I heard a sermon at Nashville Life by Alvin Love, the son of Grammy-winning Gospel art-ist CeCe Winans. He asked a great question. He said, “May-be the reason people don’t seek the kingdom, or the reason they don’t seek God, is because they don’t feel valued.” He said, “Do we know how valuable we are to God?” We want people to lis-ten and know they are, as Jesus said, “Pearls of great price....”

We hope music leads them to a restoration, a new life, renewed hope and con dence in trusting God. People are being affected by this message and our artists particularly are affected. Ellee Duke is open about how she was doubting her faith and tempted to abandon the church. Her uncle committed suicide incidentally during this process. Ellee gave the word, “Lift Me Out” which I

believe should be sung in ev-ery place that does epic worship anthems. It’s that good. Justin Williams, from American Idol, a recovering addict, was given the song “Redeemed.” The testimo-ny he gives in the music video we created for him says it all. People can watch that on our website after April 27th. I’ve been changed, strengthened, and re-committed to Jesus through this process. We want to make Him famous because He is Worthy. 9. You have many projects in play. What’s next on the hori-zon for you?

I’m wrapping up a Christmas album that’ll be released later this year. Jim Daneker, musical director for Michael W. Smith, is producing the album. It’s like Mannheim Steamroller meets Ludovico Eunaldi. I’m so bless-ed because the beloved Chris-tian artists Audrey Assad will be featured on the album along with the legend CeCe Winans. The Christmas album will be a cele-bration of God’s gift.

Paul Cardall, what more would you like to share with our readers? How can we purchase this beautiful album; “Worth Of Souls?” Can you please give us your social media contact (as live links for the magazine)?

We not only have the album on our website, but we have re-sources on depression and a suicide prevention line. We have articles that help educate on this subject. We link to powerful ser-mons that teach us our value to God and to one another. So, we encourage people to visit www. worthofsoulsproject.com and learn more.

Paul Cardall is a poster boy for the modern music industry. This truly independent artist - he owns all of his own publishing and masters - is a three time No. 1 Billboard New Age chart topper with more than 2 billion lifetime digital streams of his catalog of over 300 songs and averaging 25 million monthly streams on Pandora alone.

This recent Music Biz Association panel features indie artist Paul Cardall and his team discuss his wildly successful business, the process he went through to build a sustainable career in the streaming era and the model for other artists to find sustainable income on the streaming platforms.

May 18, 2018

Music with a clear purpose + talent + Pandora = Paul Cardall’s independent success.

I just got back from the Music Biz Conference in Nashville where I recorded an episode of the DIY Musician Podcast in front of a live audience, co-hosted a session about Star Wars — I promise it was relevant to the music industry — and spoke on a panel that examined the career of independent pianist and composer Paul Cardall.

Who, by the way, is a super nice guy. Always nice when success comes to kind people.

The importance of Pandora in Paul Cardall’s music career.

I interviewed Paul a few years back about his repeated success hitting #1 on Billboard’s New Age chart, and it was great to reconnect and take a closer look at his activity on streaming services, particularly Pandora. Not only has Pandora allowed Paul to create and strengthen his connection with his core listeners, it’s also a platform on which he’s generating impressive royalties.

Leading this panel discussion was Garrison Snell of Gyrosity, the Nashville-based agency that has taken Paul Cardall on as a management client. Garrison asked me to assist with aspects of the discussion relating to distribution and DIY release strategies, and he asked Jonathan Barnes of Pandora to provide specific details about the Music Genome, how music is surfaced on the platform, and how to use Pandora AMP to connect with listeners.

On April 27, Christian music artist and pianist Paul Cardall has released his inspirational new album "Worth of Souls" via Stone Angel Music.

The collection opens with "Come as You Are," which features the crystalline voice of Kenz Hall. It is followed by the soothing tune "Oceans" by Jordan Moyes and Ashley Hess.

Ellee Duke lends her crisp vocals on "Lift Me Out," and equally impressive is "How Can It Be" by Sierra Lauren. Jordan Moyes' voice on the acoustic guitar-driven "O Glorious Day" is smooth as silk. "The Homecoming" is pure ear candy, while "Tears of the Saints," sung by Trevor Price, has a haunting vibe to it.

Who can tell the value of a soul? Only God, and he has declared that “the worth of souls is great” in his sight (see Doctrine and Covenants 18:10). He created us, his children. He has made it his work and glory “to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man” (see Moses 1:39).

We learn from the scriptures that to have eternal life means to live forever with our Father in Heaven. He gave his Only Begotten Son to die for us, so that his beautiful promise may be fulfilled through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. He, the God of the universe, wants to be with you and with me.

Life is hard. And there are so many distractions that keep us from remembering what our Father in Heaven wants so badly for us to never forget — that we, as his literal spirit sons and daughters, have immeasurable worth.

But for so many, that is not an easy thing to accept or believe. We live in a time when who we are seems to depend greatly on what we are, or how others feel about us. And it is causing anxiety, depression and feelings of inadequacy to the point of giving up. Comparison is stealing our confidence.

Paul Cardall, an accomplished Billboard pianist, producer and artist, is seeking to change this way of thinking and to fight against these feelings that freeze us with self-doubt and insecurity by counteracting the dark surge of suicidal thoughts through what he knows best: music.

“Last October,” he told me, “while in Nashville working on my upcoming Christmas album, my manager invited my wife and I to attend ‘Nashville Life’ to meet multi-Grammy-winning gospel artist CeCe Winans and her husband. Her son Alvin Love III preached a beautiful sermon about seeking the kingdom of God … and then he asked this powerful question: ‘Do you think people aren’t seeking God’s kingdom because they don’t realize just how valuable they are to God?’

"I knew I needed to put aside my Christmas album briefly and focus on producing an album of songs that directly influence the way we think and feel about ourselves," he said. "God put on my heart the desire to organize a team of artists, genuine people of faith who had been through hard things, and produce an album of songs so sincere and honest that the music would counter negative feelings and help the listener restore confidence in God and themselves.”

The result is a stunning album called "Worth of Souls," full of uplifting and encouraging songs that are meant to help bind up broken hearts and turn thoughts to God.

“We wanted an album that appealed to every son or daughter of God regardless of their denomination,” Cardall said. “It’s for the pilgrim, prodigal, sinner and saint. Our artists attend a variety of churches, and so the lyrics and language is a universal Christian message.”

Music is sometimes the only thing that can pull me out of a confusing, stalled place and bring clarity to what my purpose is here. And we all have a purpose!

I have had the great blessing of being raised by a father who works in the mental health profession as a psychiatrist. Because he sees people at their lowest points, he has been able to teach us invaluable lessons about the value of life and how we can work to overcome feelings of hopelessness.

“There is always hope,” he says. Suicide is heartbreaking and difficult to understand. It’s absolutely life-shattering for the loved ones left behind. The heartache and guilt they carry for always wondering what they could have done can be a weight almost too heavy to bear.

This is where Christ comes in.

Our loving Savior knows us all perfectly. He knows our darkest thoughts and our hardest days. He knows how to care for us and teach us and walk with us through the hurricanes raging inside as we fight to hold on. And he knows how to embrace his children who let go.

My father-in-law, Utah Gov. Gary Herbert, recently put together a task force whose mission is to provide support and information through programs and resources combating teen suicide.

“We believe every life is important and has worth,” he said. “Suicide is sometimes difficult to talk about. But suicide is something we need to talk about and see what we can do to make things better. All of us have a role to play.”

Whether through counseling, programs or even music, the mission of people like Cardall and Herbert and countless other people across the nation is to provide hope and prevent suicide.

However, for those who have walked that path with dear ones, President M. Russell Ballard, president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, says this: “As I think about the worry and agony of those whose loved one has taken his or her own life, I find deep comfort and faith in the Lord’s promise and blessing to us who remain in mortality: ‘Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid’ (John 14:27).”

The worth of your soul is great. Believe that! If you have been suffering with feelings of hopelessness, please don’t give up. We need the unique perspective and talents and impact that only you have. God loves you.

“Where words fail, music speaks,” Cardall said.

And I believe it is through music that speaks of him that we can hear his voice speaking to us, as well.

Challenges can be devastating, but they can also lead us to discover what is most important in life, and give us the opportunity to lean on the comfort and strength of the Lord.

One of the happiest moments of my life was when my wife Brenda and I found out our life was about to change: we were expecting our first child. As we had more children our joy increased—we now have four wonderful children and a granddaughter.

When our third child was born both Brenda and our baby had significant complications. Brenda ended up in one hospital’s intensive care unit and our baby in another hospital’s newborn intensive care unit. I had no idea if they would ever return home with me. I remember watching TV that night and turning into a pile of crumpled emotions. I was overwhelmed, visiting Brenda and our infant daughter in different hospitals, being sleep deprived, trying to be a father to my other two preschoolers, and working during my medical residency. My emotions were close to the surface and raw. I was blessed to work with wonderful colleagues who would pull extra shifts so I could be where I was needed. I prayed consistently and fervently, and read scriptures often. I found comfort in John 14:5-6: “Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest and how can we know the way? Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: not man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” Thomas learned a valuable lesson: that Christ is the way and His light and love will be around, even if we don’t know the way.

My infant daughter was released from the hospital two days before my wife, and they both healed well. I was grateful for modern medicine and technology that allowed my family to live in spite of dire circumstances.

A few years ago I became friends with a man who has experienced his own serious health challenges yet these challenges have deepened his heart, and helped him to lean on the Lord.

Paul Cardall and I became friends when Paul traveled to Alaska in 2007 to perform. His story touched my heart.

I am sure Paul’s parents were excited when he was born, yet Paul was born with a congenital heart defect that limited his ability to process oxygen. He had a temporary surgery that allowed him to live, but his life was expected to be short. Paul outlived the original time limits, and he learned to play piano at age eight. Throughout his youth he played the piano for fun, and he also had two more heart surgeries. When Paul was 17, his close friend died. Paul turned to his piano music to express his sorrow and his deepest feelings.

Paul served as a missionary for his church in California, and then attended college and earned his bachelor’s degree. To earn money for college, Paul played the piano for tips at Nordstrom’s department store in Salt Lake City. One day Richard Paul Evans, the author of the The Christmas Box, heard Paul play and invited him to transform The Christmas Box into piano music. Paul’s musical rendition of the book was highly successful, and Paul traveled and performed with Evans. Paul’s music career was launched in ways he never imagined.

Paul’s music touched many lives, for example his music was played at memorials for the Oklahoma City Bombing victims in 1995. At the same time, however, his heart continued to deteriorate.

In August 2008, Paul was placed on the transplant list. On Christmas Eve, he received the call that was an answer to his prayers. He went to the hospital for his transplant. His soul felt the weight of accepting the heart from someone whose family was feeling tremendous pain at the very moment Paul’s family was rejoicing.

Paul’s high hopes were soon dashed. Since Paul’s heart was damaged from previous surgeries, the donor heart needed to be perfect, and this one wasn’t.

Paul went home on Christmas Day with an oxygen tank and pills. He continued to pray for his miracle. Adding to this difficult time of sorrow for Paul, his brother Brian died in a tragic accident soon after.

Nine months later, Paul received his new heart. The transplant was successful. Paul had a new lease on life.

Paul has gained comfort from this verse in 2 Corinthians 1:3-4: “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.”

Paul recently completed his 15th album. He has had several number one albums on the Billboard New Age Album charts. He has his own Pandora Channel with over 15 million subscribers, as well as his own record label (Stone Angel Music) and has built one of Salt Lake City’s premier recording studios. Paul has been awarded an honorary doctorate for his community service.

Surprisingly, Paul’s goal is not to make best-selling music. “My goal is to make great music that helps soften and heal the heart,” Paul says.

It’s not hard to admire a man who had every reason to fail, but has chosen to rise against adversity. Life has sometimes been difficult for Paul and he has known his share of pain and struggles. Paul says, “Out of pain, you are able to create, and to find a purpose.”

Paul will be performing in Rome and Milan in September and in Nashville this November, but before that he will be in Wasilla on Aug. 20 at 7 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, on Bogard Road, next to Wasilla High School.

He is a man of faith courage who has overcome incredible odds to be where he is today. Come for a free concert, age 8 and older, and hear the music, the story, and feel the soul of one who knows what it is like to be on borrowed time.
